Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Business and operations use personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect team members from exposure to workplace hazards and risk of injury and is an important infection control tool. PPE is not a substitute for more effective control methods. It will only be used in conjunction with other means of protection when they are not adequate or when other controls are not feasible. At no time should any team member work without proper PPE where the use or requirement to wear PPE is mandatory.

Roles and Responsibilities

Manager:

  • Conduct hazard assessments of the workplace as per Hazard Management.
  • Review and make necessary changes to the Guidelines Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Plan to best reflect the hazard controls currently implemented in the workplace. Assign appropriate PPE for the identified hazard.
  • Ensure PPE complies with all legislated requirements and regulations, manufacturer’s recommendations, and CSA standards.
  • Ensure PPE is stored in a location that is clean, secure, and readily accessible to the worker.
  • Immediately repair or replace PPE if it is defective or rendered ineffective because of contamination with hazardous substances.
  • Provide PPE training to team members exposed to the identified hazard, including periodic retraining as needed, covering the following subjects at a minimum:
    • When and what PPE is necessary.
    • How to properly put on, adjust, and remove the PPE.
    • How to properly care for, maintain, and dispose of the PPE.
  • Require team members to complete PPE training before allowing them to complete work requiring the use of PPE and ensure that workers comply with the safe work procedures.

Team Members:

  • Wear or use all PPE required by Holman.
  • Complete and apply all job-specific training in the proper use and care of PPE and take reasonable steps to prevent damage to it.
  • Inspect PPE prior to use and not use PPE found to be in a condition that makes the PPE unsuitable for use. Report to the Manager or supervisor where PPE is unsuitable for use.
