Workplace Health and Safety Inspections
The workplace joint health and safety committee members conduct inspections to identify and control deficiencies that may cause injury, illness, or property damage. Planned inspections are essential to monitor compliance and continuously improve the Health and Safety Program. At Holman Workplace inspections are conducted Monthly recorded and actioned upon the completion of inspections.
Roles and Responsibilities
Manager:
- In cooperation with the HSR or HSC member, participate in the inspection process through planned, scheduled workplace inspections as outlined below and according to the workplace inspection regulations.
- Carefully consider inspections and take corrective actions where appropriate.
- Ensure pending actions identified in the inspections are promptly resolved. Immediate action should be taken where physical harm is likely. If no action on recommendations is planned, reasons should be given in writing. In all cases, it is important to correct the underlying cause of the hazard.
Team Members:
- Take note of any present or potential hazards to support continuous inspection and elimination of hazards.
- Advise the Manager immediately if a hazard and/or deficiency is identified in processes, materials, equipment, or building. A Hazard Report is available to document.
Health and Safety Representative or Committee:
- Meet inspection schedule expectations as per provincial requirement tabled below.
- Record the findings of the inspection on the Workplace Inspection Checklist.
- Provide suggested corrective actions to the Manager to facilitate a response.
- When inspecting the first aid kits, record findings onto the First Aid Kit Content Inspection Checklist and advise the Manager of items to be restocked
- Retain the original copy of completed inspections in the secure Health and Safety Committee Folder on the Holman Shared Drive
- Make inspections available for review by the provincial occupational health and safety Inspector.
Training
All HSC members will take workplace inspection and hazard recognition training. At no time will there be any less then two members of the committee fully trained in workplace inspection and hazard recognition. (1 employee representative and 1 management representative)
Workplace Inspection Regulations
In Ontario, the HSC should be inspecting the workplace at least once a month.
