Health and Safety – Shared Commitment
Health and safety is a shared commitment that requires the active involvement and collaboration of everyone within the organization.
The Company’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Comply with applicable provincial health and safety legislation and regulations.
- Take all reasonable precautions to protect the health and safety of team members.
- Ensure that equipment, materials, and protective devices are provided and maintained in good condition.
- Inform all team members of the hazards to which they are likely to be exposed and what controls they must use to protect themselves and others.
- Appoint competent persons as *supervisor(s).
- Ensure the establishment and compliance with legislated requirements for a joint Health and Safety Committee (HSC) or Health and Safety Representative.
- Comply to all reporting requirements pertaining to certain workplace incidents, injuries, and illnesses.
The Leadership Team’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide a safe workplace and assign safe work.
- Provide team members training in the safe performance of their job including orientation, job specific training, appropriate refresher training; Assess effectiveness of the training.
- Inform team members of job hazards and train them to do their jobs safely.
- Provide supervision to ensure that team members work safely and use equipment and protective devices properly where required.
- Establish and maintain a HSC or HSR, as applicable. Co-operate with the HSR or HSC to carry out their required functions.
- Ensure team members are aware and in compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and the organization’s policies and procedures.
Team member responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work in a safe manner and in compliance with the applicable occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and the organization’s policies and procedures.
- Take all necessary precautions to ensure their own health and safety, that of any other person in the workplace.
- Use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed.
- Immediately report any workplace incident, injury, or accident to the Manager.
- Report any hazard, breach of policies and procedures, or an unsafe condition or process to the Manager.
- Ask first – Any concerns and questions regarding health and safety must be brought to the Manager so necessary measures can be taken to avoid injuries and/or accidents.
*Leadership Team: is anyone who instructs, directs, and controls team members as they carry out their work tasks. This can be owners, managers, team leads. When appointing someone into this role, the employer must ensure the person is competent. To be competent, they must have enough knowledge, training, and experience to organize the work and how it is to be performed. They must also be familiar with occupational health and safety legislation that apply to the workplace and know about any actual or potential health and safety hazards in the workplace.
