Hazard Management

Hazard management consists of recognizing, assessing, and controlling any practice, behaviour, substance, condition, or combination of these that can cause injury or illness to individuals, or damage to property in the workplace. This includes an assessment of the risk of workplace violence.

Roles and Responsibilities

Manager

Upon implementation of the H&S Program, annually thereafter or when a new hazard is identified or introduced:

  • Review the Workplace Hazard Assessment chartthat outlines the prevalent hazards in the workplace.
  • Complete theViolence Risk Assessment checklist.
  • Work in collaboration with the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) or Health and Safety Committee Member (HSC) in identifying actual and potential workplace hazards.
  • Make any required modifications to theWorkplace Hazard Assessment chart to accurately represent the hazards and the corresponding safety measures implemented in the workplace including current workplace violence risks and controls.
  • Provide a copy of Workplace Hazard Assessment to the HSR or HSC.
  • Ensure all team members are trained according to their role, on the hazards identified, the associated risks, the measures implemented for hazard elimination or control.
  • Monitor and evaluate controls for continuing effectiveness through the following workplace practices:
    • Workplace inspections and job observations.
    • Review and investigation of near misses, hazard reports, incident reports and injury/illness investigations.
    • Annual hazard assessment review process.
  • Consider changes in the workplace that may require adjustments in control methods.
  • Seek better controls as they become available.


Team Member

  • Stay attentive to surroundings.
  • Use Hazard Report form to report hazards.
  • Participate in hazard assessments.
  • Share observations and suggestions.
  • Follow safety procedures.
  • Use provided safety equipment.
  • Take action to minimize hazards.
  • Participate in training.
