It incorporates several key elements including, hazard identification and product classification, labelling, safety data sheets (SDS), and team member education and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hazardous product<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 If a product covered by the&nbsp;Hazardous Products Act&nbsp;meets the criteria to be included in a hazard class or category, it is a \u201chazardous product\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Safety Data Sheets<\/strong> &#8211; SDSs tell users what the hazards of the product are, how to use the product safely, what to expect if the recommendations are not followed, how to recognize symptoms of exposure, and what to do if emergencies occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roles and Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manager:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Know what hazardous products are present in the Practice, and how they are used, handled, or stored. Prepare a <em>Workplace Hazardous Materials Inventory<\/em> and maintain an accurate record of all hazardous products used and stored.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obtain all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) from the supplier and ensure the SDS\u2019s are current and readily available to the HSR or HSC and to all team members on all shifts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that hazardous products are properly labelled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify the hazards associated with the use, storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure appropriate control measures are in place to protect the health and safety of team members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine who may be exposed to the hazardous products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure education and training are delivered in a manner that enables team members to protect their safety and health and ensure team members comply with procedures when using, storing, handling, or disposing of hazardous products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult with the HSC when developing, implementing, or reviewing the education and training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the program at least annually or more frequently if required and maintain a written record of the WHMIS program review.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All <strong>team members<\/strong> are expected to work safely for the protection of themselves, coworkers, clients, and the environment. They are required to attend all training sessions and participate in identifying and controlling hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Procedures and Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Safety Data Sheets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The information elements provided on an SDS is required in both official languages of Canada (English and French).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult the HSC on how best to make\u00a0SDSs available in the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing an SDS in an electronic format is acceptable as long as it remains easily accessible during each shift.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The SDS are required to be updated within 90 days when significant new information becomes available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Labelling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All containers of hazardous products require supplier labels for use in the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supplier labels cannot be altered while the controlled product remains in the container.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Illegible, damaged, or removed labels are required to be replaced with a supplier or workplace label.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any hazardous product transferred to another container will receive a workplace label.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update labels or information on containers when significant new data is provided by the supplier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supplier labels are required to be in both official languages of Canada (English and French).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Training<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide general information as set out in the\u00a0Mandatory Health and Safety Orientation Training to team members who work with a hazardous product, or who may be exposed to a hazardous product as part of their work activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide product-specific training on specific work procedures, spill procedures, storage procedures, emergency procedures, personal protective equipment, and first aid measures to team members who work with a hazardous product, or who may be exposed to a hazardous product as part of their work activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete education and training prior to team members commencing work, annually, and with any change in potential for exposure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirm completion of training and knowledge transfer. Ensure team members can apply information for their safety and the safety of others in the workplace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain a written record of training, attendance sheets, quizzes, and annual review.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Periodically evaluate team members&#8217; knowledge using written tests, practical demonstrations, and other suitable means<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Post all changes to the program on the <em>Health and Safety Communication Board<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include all changes to the program as an agenda item at the general\/safety meeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post <em>WHMIS 2015 posters<\/em> depicting the symbols and associated risks in all work areas where there is a potential for exposure to hazardous materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preparing for an Inspection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be prepared to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Demonstrate that a WHMIS program is in place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show where the SDSs are for the hazardous products used in the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show that hazardous products in use have the appropriate labels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show education and training records for team members who work with or may be exposed to a hazardous product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspectors may need to speak to team members to confirm that education and training has taken place.
